Book Club: Because of Winn-Dixie

Book Club: Because of Winn-Dixie

from 90.00

Four-week book club featuring Newbery Award winner Because of Winn-Dixie

Synopsis: India Opal Buloni and her preacher father move to a small town in Florida, where India adopts a smiling stray dog she finds wrecking the aisles of a grocery store. Winn-Dixie's charming smile and India's honest, fair personality help them befriend a host of colorful, local characters that just might give India the meaningful friendships she yearns for.

We will explore the story's main characters, plot events, and themes of loneliness, friendship, and forgiveness. Our fun, hands-on activities will mirror India's experiences:

Week 1 - Students will write and illustrate a prequel to the story by envisioning Winn-Dixie's life prior to meeting India in the grocery store.

Week 2 - Students will discuss bullying, brainstorming ways to understand, engage and even befriend bullies, then act out their ideas.

Week 3 - Students will create collages reflecting their own circle of friends and families and what makes them all unique.

Week 4 - Students will enjoy a potluck lunch while watching the movie version of Because of Winn-Dixie, comparing and contrasting it with the book.
