Tuesday Electives

Physical Education, Health & Fitness (ages 5-9 & 10-14+) Tuesday 8:30-9:45am & 10:00-11:15am)

Staying active is a lifelong pursuit, and finding hobbies that can provide regular activity is one of the keys to lifelong health and wellness. Students will design their own fitness courses and create innovative ways to stay active. And if that doesn’t work, we’ll just run stadium miles for an hour. Haha. Just kidding. Or R we?

Bling-Bling & Ka-Ching! (Ages 10-14+) Tuesdays 8:30-9:45am

Creativity? Business acumen? Marketing? Platforms for retail sales? In Etsy Etsy Bling Bling Bling, students will explore the balance of mind and practice required to open up an online Jewelry store. Consider it an entrepreneurial crash course.

Gardening (ages 5-9) Tuesday 10:00-11:15am

Students will plan, plant, tend, and harvest edible and non-edible plants for each growing season.  Between gardening sessions, students will confront the issues facing our environment today, including threats of pesticides, pollution, habitat loss and other human impacts on the natural world around us. Students will learn what plants and animals need to survive, the importance of balanced ecosystems, and steps we can take to support the interconnected web of life around us and become better stewards of the Earth.

Improv(ing) social skills (ages 5-14+) Tuesday 12:15-1:30pm

In this fun, interactive improv class, students will engage in the act of risk-taking in a safe environment and learn the art of “Yes, and . . .” Life can be messy, and so often, we expect everything to turn out perfectly, but in this class, students learn to expect the mess and then find ways to get through it (or around it).

Anyone Can Art (ages 10-14+) Tuesdays 12:15-1:30Pm

The next 9 weeks will be filled with projects showing us that everyone has creativity. We will be drawing inspiration from nature, household items, and our classmates to show that anything and anyone can be art. We will be learning about the color wheel and how to blend colors as well as contrasting colors. We will learn that art doesn’t have to be perfect and will learn about different artists, past and present, using them for inspiration. Jackson Pollock might make an appearance, so sending an oversized t-shirt wouldn’t be a bad idea! Everyone can art!

Snack Mine-crafting (ages 5-9) Tuesday 1:45-3:00pm

Snack Mine Crafting is about exploring all the ins and outs of a great snack: presentation, scientific information, flavor, and social experience. Kids should come prepared to invigorate their minds, senses, and taste buds. This will be a playful journey on the snack train to Yummy Town! They are all MINE!!

YouTubeYou (Ages 10-14+) Tuesday 1:45-3:00pm

Yeah yeah yeah! Every kid wants to be an internet celebrity! So why not empower them to really start thinking about what it takes to do it? In YouTube® You! students will get the joy of being in front of the camera but will also explore the deeper topics of developing content, marketing, diversifying revenue streams, and experiencing the reality of what it’s like to be a YouTube® celebrity.

Thursday Electives

Music for Muses (ages 5-9) Thursday 8:30-9:45am

External distractions in our world pull our attention out of ourselves and away from our bodies/feelings, but how can students become more mindful of what is happening in their own bodies? By becoming the muse for their own music. In Muses for Music, students will learn the fundamentals of rhythm, melody, music appreciation, and how to find that own inner spring of creativity.

Hammertime: Destroy, Investigate, Understand! (Ages 10-14+) Thursday 8:30-9:45am

This class will employ various methods of deconstructing donated items to learn about how they are put together, how they function, and where they might be vulnerable. Perhaps in the process, we might learn something about ourselves as well.

Sensational Salads, Jr (ages 5-9 & 10-14) Thursday 10:00-11:15am & 12:15-1:30pm)

R School cooking classes are designed to encourage innovation, divergent thinking, independence, curiosity, and risk-taking, while fostering creativity, resilience, and flexibility -- all within a safe, encouraging, and delicious environment. This 9 weeks they will look at how flexible, edible, and creative salads can be.

Book Club: Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (ages 10-14+) Thursday 10:00-11:15am

There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened.

 Don’t forget a towel.

Creative Movement (Ages 5-9) Thursday 12:15-1:30pm

Students in Creative Movement will explore movement through creative challenges, choreography, and more. All classes will include a warm-up & cool down that incorporate a fusion of dance styles, fun, age-appropriate movements, exercise, and yoga.

This quarter, students will engage their imaginations through games and storytelling using simple puppets that can be created by the children themselves. Students will act out stories as part of retelling or adapting various children’s books.

Advanced Cooking (Ages 7-14+) Thursday 1:45-3:00pm

We are excited to offer, for the very first time, an advanced R School cooking class this quarter.  This course is designed to help students find basic ingredients in the pantry, refrigerator, freezer, or garden and turn them into delicious meals and snacks. Participants must receive permission to register for this class.
