Lower Elementary

R School understands that young children learn through play and through stimulating, hands-on activities, games, and other academic enrichment.  Our Lower Elementary program is designed to meet the specific needs of young children, ages 5-9, by combining creativity, social interaction, and exploration with developmentally appropriate academic instruction.

I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes. Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You’re doing things you’ve never done before, and more importantly, you’re doing something.
— Neil Gaiman

Students enrolled in our full-time Lower Elementary program will receive a minimum of 420 hours (MWF 8:30am-3:30pm) of core English / Language Arts (ELA), Social Studies (SS), Science, and Math (STEM),  plus a minimum of 360 hours (T/Th 8:30am-3:30pm) of various electives, enrichment, small-group, or 1:1 tutoring throughout the year. Electives and enrichment may include art, music, physical education, gardening, cooking, crafts, engineering, technology, and more, for a total of 780+ instructional hours. Additionally, our Lower Elementary students receive a minimum of one hour each day of unstructured outdoor play.

Upper Elementary

I never teach my pupils I only attempt to provide the conditions in which they can learn.
— Albert Einstein

Our Upper Elementary program is designed to foster the natural curiosity of young children, ages 8-11, while developing the independent-functioning and academic skills necessary for more complex activities. R School believes that children grow academically and socially through inquiry-driven, project-based collaborations and useful problem-solving skill development, so the Upper Elementary curriculum is designed to encourage depth, not breadth, and to cultivate a process of inquiry as the foundation for more advanced academic skills.

Students enrolled in our full-time Upper Elementary program will receive 540 hours (MWF 8:30am-3:30pm) of integrated English / Language Arts (ELA), Social Studies (SS), Science, and Math (STEM),  plus a minimum of 360 hours (T/Th 8:30am-3:30pm) of various electives throughout the year, including art, music, physical education, gardening, cooking, crafts, engineering, technology, and more, for a total of 900+ instructional hours. Additionally, our Lower Elementary students receive a minimum of one hour each day of unstructured outdoor play.

Middle School (ages 10-14)

When you get away from all grades and rewards, kids are more likely to pick things that are challenging for them. When you add many grades and rewards, people are more likely to try things that are easier, that they have a better chance of ‘passing.
— Alfie Kohn

Middle School is a time for exploring passions, finding out what makes each of us unique, and learning how we fit into the world around us.  R School sees individual curiosities, abilities, and learning styles as important factors in designing, differentiating, and assessing learning. Students in our Middle School program are encouraged to follow their interests, pursue problems and knowledge that build on their current understanding of the world, and defend their conclusions by explaining their thinking in a variety of ways.

Students enrolled in our full-time Middle School program will receive a minimum of 540 hours (MWF 8:30am-3:30pm) of English / Language Arts (ELA), Social Studies (SS), Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) plus a minimum 360 hours of various electives throughout the year, including art, music, physical education, gardening, cooking, crafts, engineering, technology, and more, for a minimum of 900+ instructional hours. Additionally, our Middle School students receive a minimum of one hour each day of unstructured time outside.

R School understands that for some children, the homeschool or non-traditional educational environment provides the best learning opportunities, and we are here to support your efforts through individual and small group academic tutoring, assessment, and portfolio review by certified teachers.
